About the event
It was the 9 August 1173 when the construction site opened for the construction of the most famous Tuscan bell tower in the world. Today Tower of Pisa (an integral part of the monumental religious complex of the so-called Piazza dei Miracoli) completes 850 years and to celebrate the anniversary, a committee of experts has been established to organize and coordinate the calendar of events which will take place until 9 August 2024.
It took over 100 years to build the most famous Leaning Tower in the world. The architect, sculptor and bronze worker Bonanno Pisano its construction began on 9 August 1173 with the first floor, embraced by 15 white marble columns, classical capitals and blind arches. After five years, upon reaching the third floor, the tower tilted due to the unstable subsoil and the construction site stopped. The works resumed in 1275, under the guidance of John of Simone and Giovanni Pisano, adding three more floors to the previous construction that curve in the opposite direction to the slope, in a (vain) attempt to straighten the tower. Finally, the bell tower was completed in the middle of the following century, adding the belfry. The Tower stands out on Piazza del Duomo (a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987) with its 58 meters, becoming the iconic protagonist in the photos of numerous tourists from all over the world.
The program opens on 9 August 2023 with a series of events that inaugurate the annual program which will feature the famous "leaning" Tower. In addition to the ringing of the seven bells of the Campanile (one for each musical note), scheduled for midday, access to the monuments of Piazza del Duomo will be free for the entire day, with the exception of the Tower because it will be illuminated. Furthermore, the 850th anniversary logo will be projected on the external wall of the Opera Museum. Finally, at 9.45pm, on the steps of the Cathedral, in front of the door of San Ranieri, there will be a piano concert conducted by Maestro Ramin Bahrami, with free access, who will perform pieces by Bach, Beethoven, Mozart and Chopin.
